The Senate

There was much strong debate during session on March 5th. Bills 12 and 17 fought a good fight but failed. Then it was bills 26 (Tobacco Advertising Reform Act) turn, passing by only one vote. This bill would allow advertising for tobacco products on radio and television legal. Following this bill came Bill 14 also passing with a 23-16 victory. This bill would repeal section 86 from the 1901 Alabama Constitution.

The House

While the Senate was in session, so was the House. Though this session started slowly with failing of Bill 40, which would ban reserved parking spaces for facility and staff on a college campus. Things quickly changed after the passage of Bill 11 (The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans-gender [LGBT] Defense Act). This bill would give LGBT equal not special privileges in the state of Alabama. The following bill (In-State Tuition Act) sparked much controversy. This bill would give out-of-state students in-state tuition after becoming a sophomore and maintaining a 2.5 GPA. Right before luch, bill 17 also passed making it mandatory for any individual teaching in a higher education establishment to take at least 12 hours of education prior to their employment.

Students of C-Leg divided themselves into committees for the games late last night. Four games were played. There was an overall excitement throughout the crowd as they participated and cheered their teammates on. No clear winner was declared during these events, but one thing is clear: everyone was excited during the games. The highlight of the evening came from Tory Green when he gave an unexpecting upset  in being the winner of the musical chairs game. Can’t wait to see who wins next year’s annual musical chair match!!!!!!!!! E’Licia

Looks like Collegiate Legislature 2010 is officially underway tonight with the opening sessions. This years theme is the A-Team so the officers dressed up a their favorite characters of the 80′s. Stars like Madonna,  Tom Cruise (x2), Rick James, Prince, Micheal Jackson, and Cindi Lauper were in attendance. Tom Cruise (Michael Finn) quickly went through the roll call. Every delegation was enthusiastic about being here. The ever-so entertaining cast then showed the C-Leg attendees all the do’s and don’ts on how to debate a bill. Though the session was highly entertaining, it was very informative. The group then broke up into committee meetings. E’Licia

Mayo: Confused with this bill, talks if the University denies the SGA Act. Asks if Senators Nix, and Wright know a law that states about the State of Alabama giving funds to the organization if they comply to the University.

House Bill 24 “Health Care for University Students”

Health Care will ONLY be provided for students with a 3.0 GPA and above. This is debatable because grades don’t play a factor in your physical health.

Update 11:07 a.m.: There’s currently much discussion about how House Bill 011 “Ban Foreign Teachers Act” was worded. Delegates believe that some of the language presented could suggest ethnic and racial undertones. With that said, the bill has just failed unanimously.

Sade McClaney gives her opinion during debate in Opening Session last night.

Scandalous celebrities, paparazzi, and a new venue kicked off Collegiate Legislature 2009, also known as C-Leg. Many activities were planned last night, including an Opening Session and mock debate to break the ice. The purpose of this was to get everyone well acquainted with parliamentary procedure. Although there are several returning delegates, everyone needs a little refresher now and then. Look out for more updates from me as the conference continues.
